Lots of good writeups on 7QP (and the other QPs held that weekend) at 3830.
Nice write up with pictures of the KF7P multi-single county expedition operation that ran up an impressive score from the Piute/Sevier (Utah) county line: KF7P's Website
Great fun this year. Decided to use new ACOM 2000A and enter in high-power section. New four-element 40M vertical endfire/broadside array worked well. Maybe will have similar antennas for 80M & 160M next year. Hope to replace aging FT-1000D with K3 next year. Riki/K7NJ
Got snowed out of home QTH and power there was off for two days so operated from a mobile home in CHO county with the car antenna coax going into the house through a window. Matt/K7BG
When I worked Wyoming as my first contact I thought I was off to a good start towards at least a WAS in this contest, but missed five states when it was all over including Idaho. That shouldn't be in the 7-Land QSO Party, hi! Fred/KS7T
New Ham, 1st time, good time. Jim/WB7ENX
I was surprised that we heard so much activity on the West Coast on the 1st of May. Thanks to all who heard my weak signal in the 7th Call Area. Best wishes from far off land of Russia! Alexei/UA3VVB
Terrible weather on Lookout Pass - snow, rain, sleet and high winds. Not a very good propagation location either. But I made a lot of people happy with two states and two rare counties. Bob/AC7GP
Had a great time this year in the 7QP. Started out in Crook County, Wyoming, then to MTCRT, MTPWD, MTCUS, MTROS, MTGAR, MTMCC, MTDAW, MTRIC, back to MTDAW, MTWIB and finished in MTFAL. This 11-county drive including the travel from central South Dakota and home was over 1400 miles. I think I am getting too old for this! High winds made driving difficult with rain most of the day that turned to snow after dark which really made driving a challenge. I built a coil and whip extension for the screwdriver to enable 160 meters, but when I tried to install it, I could tell the high winds would put too much stress on the screwdriver so off it came and we made no contacts on 160. It seems like we make improvements every year with the mobile. We still have some RF issues on 80 meters so were only able to run about 50 watts on that band due to RF to the laptop locking the radio in transmit. Too bad we did not hear more activity on 15 meters. Only worked three on 15M with AB8CK the only North American station heard on that band. The most worked station was K7EAR who was loud everywhere. The second most worked was K7ZSD who we worked from nine counties, and third was DL5AWI who worked us in eight counties, many on more than one band! 20 meters was our best band by 12 contacts over 40, and most of the 38 DX contacts were on 20 meters. Thanks to everyone for the contacts and hope to see you next year! Jim/KD0S
Worked many QSO's in 7QP while operating portable in the INQP. We were located at the Warren County and Fulton County line in Indiana and worked all of the 7QP folks we could! It's great to be able to operate INQP, 7QP, and NEQP all at the same time, but I really wish the three of us could agree on a common exchange format to simplify exchanges and logging. Thanks for all of your hard work in putting on 7QP and especially for working with the INQP folks to cross promote both QP's! You guys did a great job! Dave/N9FN
My first experience in a county party from the USA! Real pleasure to operate 7QP from great antenna farm of Paul Bittner, W0AIH. Since the station is set for M/M operation I had no time to reconfigure it for Single-Op, so we decided to make it M/S with occasional help from Paul who was busy with his antenna job during the party. We had no cluster and no separate S&P position but Paul helped not to lose Q's during my smoke breaks! Hopping between different bands (and houses) with the laptop was really funny but it resulted in less than 17 hours on-the-air time. Thanks to all who called us and to mobiles driving to those less-populated counties. Dima/AB8CK ( homecall UA3AGW)
The best part about the event was that 20 meters suddenly opened up and I worked Europe from a horizontal wire loop that is set up for NVIS work. It is designed to cover Oregon for 40 and 80 meters. It is only 12 feet off the ground. That was great. I know that there will be others with much higher scores. However, I doubt that they had more fun than I did!!! Kevin/NB7O
Tried something different this year - QRP, and operating in four different contests at once: 7QP, Indiana, New England, and ARI DX contests! With less than five watts, I worked 14 states and five European countries. Surprisingly, I got few requests for fills. I just wish I could have gotten on the air earlier in the day, and stayed awake to the end. Richard/WQ9T
Thanks for the fun contest. 7QP could be nicknamed the 'NVIS Contest.' Sometimes my low suburban stealth 40m dipole was an advantage -- this is the first time I have ever been on top of a mini-pileup, and I got a couple of "big signal" reports. That's a treat, very rare for me. During daytime on 40m high takeoff angles are a good thing! I was disappointed by the lack of RTTY activity. I was shaking my head because people were busy on the phone bands getting two points per QSO while three-point RTTY CQs were going unanswered. Yeah, I know, I shoulda been workin' CW. Now, if I could just finish learning CW :-) Thanks to all for the QSOs and thanks to the organizers for putting this event together. Jim/K6VAR
What great fun, thanks to all the hard working folks that put this together. Better band conditions, more folks, great to be called by DX stations, and by US stations while in a run. Antennas are wire, 2 ea 360 foot long 50 foot up, and 1 at 130 foot, switched for best signal. Some of you have very good ears. Some didn't need to, as the props were running good. Dale/WC7S
Great participation from the 7th call area. In spite of noisy band condx it was still a fun contest. Hope to see you all during the Alabama QSO Party, 05 June, 2010 (11-2300 CDST). Tom/W4NBS
Thanks for fun contest. First go at 7QP and had a great time but conditions were poor. Tried new logging software (SD) -- worked well. Jim/K7JAN
There were lots of big signals coming out of 7-land this year. Operated mostly on wire antennas this year since my rotor decided to park itself oriented to the NE. Mike/ND4V
40 meter CW most productive. Never found Nevada or Idaho. I am sure NV & ID were out there, but not heard here. Good condx & five watts worked well. Pete/NO2D
First year operating this on contest on purpose, but I think I'm hooked now. The wife and I were camping for her birthday and I knew this was going to be the same weekend... I was only at the radio for about two hours, other things going on (i.e. playing fetch with the dog, talking to the wife or cooking) kept pulling me away. Next year I may have to take this more serious. My only goal was to work one station in each of the 7-land states I had to search pretty hard for Wyoming, then shut off the radio. As the wife and I were going through the list I realized I didn't work another Idaho station. As tempting as it was to hand her an HT and make a contact, I flipped the radio back on and to 80m. I knew it wouldn't be easy as almost every station I worked told me I was their first from Idaho. I finally found KE7ADU replying to CQs working up the band, I matched his pattern, got a few khz up and started calling him directly... I think he was a little surprised when he found me :) But, I got every state in 7-land and again signed off for the night. Most of these contacts were 20w or less. I was 100% Battery (with solar, but it was snowing) so only 1 or 2 were over 20w. I'm looking forward to next year, thanks for the hard work of putting this together. Zeb/W7ATC
G'day to all other Ops in Party. Used "SD" programme by EI5DI -- worked very FB. Keith/VK4TT
Good to work you Dick in so many counties. Bad storms in this neck of the woods killed Saturday night for me, lightning too close for comfort! Fortunately we missed the flooding so far, although it was pretty heavy duty last night and more on the way! Nice to see this one staying healthy, it's no small feat! Jules/N2WN
Thanks for all the QSOs, including three all-time new counties from KD0S/M (with WD0T), N0QXW/R and K4XU/M, including my last county in Oregon (Grant). Sorry time was limited this year. John/K4BAI.
This was my first try at expedition operation, and Murphy was very persistent. The Grayland Beach State Park ranger had no sense of humor at all... At least I was able to get seven contacts in Pierce County, WA. CU next year! Leroy/N7EIE
KE7GYQ and I enjoyed 7QP from Gardner Canyon, in Santa Cruz County, Arizona. Extreme wind and low temps somewhat limited operating time. Still cold with three layers of clothing, the fourth layer was the sleeping bag! Enjoyed the operating time we did have, though, plenty of Outlaws on the air! Gary/KE7DX
Hello all from Japan. Participated only for an hour but enjoyable. Hope see you on the next 7QP. Kohei/JR0BAQ
We had a lot of fun but wish we got more action on 15M...it was a struggle. I'll never understand how things can work well the night before and fail at O'dark hundred at the beginning of the contest?!? We got the bugs worked out early and had a good time and got a bunch of guys through the seats. This was our first 7QP and look forward to next year. As always, thanks to the casual contesters and new guys who came out and gave us Q's. Paul/KK7OO
Didn't know this was the weekend of the 7QP until late Saturday evening. Was out camping in Grant County with battery powered FT-817 and Buddipole configured as vertical, so jumped in on the activity on 40 meter CW. Only contacted 19 stations but enjoyed some nice radio conditions away from all the static and noise at my QTH in Portland. Jamie/KL7WP/7
Good activity on 80M. My modest antenna improvement from last year helped some, I think. I made nearly as many total Qs as I did in the NEQP, and New England is only a couple hundred miles from here. Jim/K1TN
Had a great time! Lots of FB ops in the contest. One big problem I had is that I was also running mobile in the MARAC County Hunters contest. I had a VERY frustrating time getting 7QP stations to work me each time I entered a new county or state. I know it was a dupe for them, but it wasn't for me!! Some finally obliged, but many refused or I am sure worked me but didn't log it in their logs as they already told me it was going to be a dupe. I think some stations finally worked me just to get me to stop calling them over and over. Next year, PLEASE make it clear that mobile stations in other QSO parties DO need their 7QP QSOs in their logs. Thanks and see you next year!! 73 to all! Kerry/W4SIG
No QSO's on 10M, but 15, 20, 40, and 80M were productive. It was interesting to work almost all states in just a few hours. Activity level from 7-land was high. Jon/K1NV
I entered on a whim and spent the day on and off answering 7-area stations calling CQ 7QP on 20M CW. Lots of fun, had a blast. I'll do it again. I entered by hand the data for my contacts using your sample Cabrillo form as a guide -- I hope I got it right. Logging software is on my list. Graham/VE3GTC
I had fun in the contest -- thanks for sponsoring it! I operated PORTABLE from Caprock Canyons State Park near Quitaque TX -- used a crystal controlled direct conversion transceiver (a Rockmite) at 500mW. K7IA called CQ right on my crystal frequency! Scott/W5ESE
Originally I was going to operate with another ham but problems developed getting his station on the air so I dug out the shovel and found my rig under a pile of junk, made a couple of quick fixes to the antenna, and got on the air for the first time in eight years using a TS-940, Mosley 3-element tribander up about 40' and an 80-meter dipole at about the same height. Worked about 75 stations for 3162 points according to N1MM logger software. Had fun, thanks to the folks that put the contest together, plan to have a better setup next year. Chuck/K7BVT
Worked 17 stations -- that is a good effort for me anymore! All but two on 80M CW, using the HRO-60 and the ARC5 driving a pair of 805s... Mike/W7DRA
I had a great afternoon running a frequency on 40 with my little K1 and an EDZ on 40M. Only put in about four hours total but got 60 Qs! Very fun running QRP in 7QP.... Paula/NX1P |
